Until not longago love serenatas were heard along the streets of Salento.
Whenever somebody was serenaded, sounds and chants were supposed to be
pleasing not only the sweetheart at the window but also the family and neighborhood.
If the lover was going to be in any danger, due to unconsenting relatives or any other lover in ambush,it was usual to commission the performance of the serenata from
"musicians" or "agents". It is a journey to the borderline between folk and contemporary music, through originals and new arrangements of traditional chants from the Salento popular tradition. The jazzy harmonic tessiturae melt with the originally melodic traditional figures, thus creating a brand new show.

The band Mayis (muh-y-æ, May) offers the "MANDATARI" show on stage and features Vito de Lorenzi on ethnic drums and percussions, Raffaele Casarano on soprano saxophone and xaphoon, Giuseppe Spedicato on acoustic bass, Valerio Daniele on acoustic guitar, Dario Muci on vocals and Mattia Soranzo on slide-show. Meeting Valerio Daniele and Vito de Lorenzi, band co-founders, and later Giuseppe Spedicato and Raffaele Casarano was a precious event. They make rock melt into blues emotion, jazz tendencies into sounds and rhythms of their own homeland, thus producing a completely brand new music.
